Psychiatric Rehabilitation Program

Total wellness in recovery is important for people living with mental illness. Many people who live with mental illness do not seek or receive regular or adequate primary healthcare. Research has shown that it is difficult for most individuals living with mental illness to access care due to illness related interferences such as; financial issues, homelessness, and effects of illness symptoms. People who have mental health conditions have a life span that is, on average, 13 to 30 years shorter than that of the general population. Other conditions that cause earlier deaths include cancer, respiratory and lung disease (such as emphysema), and liver complications. Other factors include but are not limited to smoking, substance abuse, lack of exercise, medication side effects, and unhealthy diet. Maintaining an active wellness plan and activities promote general health and longevity.

Below are some notable wellness practices individuals can benefit from;

Be aware of any of the physical side effects that medication(s) may cause and how they might affect health. When the doctor prescribes medication, talk to him or her about any precautions to take or regular tests or blood work that might be important to have. Talk to the doctor right away about any side affects you think you may be experiencing.

This can help detect health problems early, such as high blood pressure, heart disease, or diabetes. When a person stays on top of his or her health, it’s possible to identify changes early and take steps to keep diseases in check.

A psychiatrist and therapist can help control symptoms and keep a mental health condition effectively managed.

Quitting smoking, eating nutritious food, reducing stress, and exercising regularly can help maintain physical health. The Recovery section offers ideas about creating a routine that you can stick with.

Everyone needs a place to call home. Some people with a serious mental health condition live with a spouse, family member, or roommate in housing that they own or they rent independently.

People who live with mental health conditions and other serious mental health conditions, like all people, tend to have good times and difficult times throughout their lives. Most people who have mental health conditions experience times of remission, when symptoms are under control, and times of relapse, when symptoms return or even get worse.

Relapse can happen quickly, within days. But it’s most common for a relapse to develop gradually. Knowing the triggers and noticing the signs of relapse as early as possible can help prevent the relapse from occurring—or reduce its severity. Early intervention may help avoid hospitalization—or make it possible for a person to have a shorter hospital stay and get back to his or her life and recovery.

It’s impossible to predict exactly what each person’s early signs of relapse will be. But over time, it may be possible to notice a pattern of similar early warning signs. It is usually very subtle at first—people may not notice anything different unless they know the person with a mental health condition very well. Sometimes, it can just be the sound of the person’s voice. Or it may be that the person is being quiet when he or she normally would not be.

Some of the common early signs of relapse include:

  • Restless or unsettled sleep
  • Feelings of tension or nervousness
  • Having a hard time concentrating
  • Not wanting to spend time with others; staying isolated
  • Feeling irritable or having a short temper
  • Having trouble taking care of routine things
  • Feeling a lack of energy
  • Feeling sad or depressed
  • Feeling confused
  • A change in appetite
  • Disturbed (or lack of) sleep; feeling extremely excited
  • Talking quickly and talking more than usual
  • Making big plans without thinking them through
  • Acting reckless
  • Feeling very tired
  • Feeling very depressed
  • While every relapse experience is unique, a person’s early warning signs tend to be similar each time.

Keeping a list of early warning signs experienced my help to develop good relapse prevention strategies.

Some common relapse triggers include but are not limited to:

  • Not taking medication regularly or correctly as prescribed by your doctors.
  • Not attending scheduled doctors and therapist appointments regularly.
  • Not reporting symptoms and side effects to your doctors and care givers.
  • Use of street drugs/illicit drugs or alcohol. This can trigger a relapse in many people.
